The results of aluminium packaging recycling in Italy in 2024

In 2024, according to the CIAL national report, Italy recycled 68.2% of the aluminium packaging placed on the market, equal to over 62,400 tons. Also considering energy recovery, the total amount of recovered packaging reaches 71.7%. Although there is a slight decrease compared to 2023, this is attributable to the expansion of the reporting criteria introduced by the new European standards, which also include the aluminum present in composite packaging. Furthermore, the market entry recorded an increase of 8.5% compared to the previous year, highlighting the Italian system’s ability to manage growing volumes.

Environmental and economic benefits of aluminium recycling

Aluminium recycling offers significant environmental benefits. In 2024, thanks to the recycling of aluminium packaging, the emission of approximately 442 thousand tons of CO₂ was avoided and energy savings equal to 197 thousand tons of oil equivalent were achieved. These results underline the efficiency of aluminium recycling, which requires only 5% of the energy needed to produce primary aluminium.
